Running the Network

Blog to share a learning experience (alas,in retrospect) and explore knowledge communication. A paradigm based on reflecting participatory observation of Network evolution. Hopefully a customized knowledge structure will morph. On the look out for similar forms to link to ... ycor

About ideas in ICT-points

Reflecting on 'my ICT-points' will take me as far back as the time that my initiation to Computing started with issues such as :

  • BASIC program (1971)
  • remote login to US by teletype in UK (1972)
  • digital architecture (1974)
  • chess-playing ALGOL-60 (1975)
  • Turing Machine (1976)
  • PDP-11 running Unix edition-7 and C (1977)
  • Theory of Computer Science by J.Brady, book (1978)
  • SASL programming and implemtation internals (1979)
  • PSS - Packet Switching Service (1980)
  • VAX/VMS/Decnet (1981)
  • Massive Parallel architectures (1982)
  • ARPANET services (1982)
  • ALGOL-W on INTEL-8086 (1979)
  • Wireless Wide-Area TDM (1983)
  • REFAL Metacomputation (1984)
  • TELEFILE X.25 (1986)
  • SUNET X.400 (1987)
The points above opened up threads of thought that continuously extend to include 'well known knots' that define the knowledge structure I attempt to construct.

Then it will pass over the points (of the knowledge construction achieved) that related to the convergence of Computing and Networking in order to reach the present day status of 'my knowledge path' (which includes of course the overall appreciation ). I will talk about points such as:
  • OSI networks (1986)
  • Transpac (1987)
  • COSINE X.400 (1988)
  • RFC-987 gateways (1989)
  • RIPE (1990)
  • Autonomous System Routing (1991)
  • Networked Information (1992)
  • The CHEOPS satellite High speed Network (1993)
  • The EBONE network (1993)
  • The MIME 1.0 multimedia for Internet (1992)
  • The ARCHIE system (1993)
  • The UNICORN EDI e-commerce standard (1995)
  • The Global-360 Interactive TV (1998)
  • Know Your Enemy (2002)
  • ..........................................................

Now, the above are real ICT-points, there are also virtual points that I did not experience directly but through studying the works of people that brought them about like the Domain Name System (1983) and the Strowger switch (1891).
